  • My grandmother's family lived in High Gate. Her maiden name was Martha Ellen Stump (her married name was Hunter). I believe several Stump family members are buried in the cemetery at the High Gate Baptist Church. My cousin, Gertie Birdsong, was Postmistress of High Gate at one time.
I have only been to High Gate twice in my life. The first time was long ago, probably in the 1950's. We saw the post office, which was in a mobile unit. Our cousin was very proud of the Post Office, and proud of her job. We also visited a great uncle who lived in High Gate. My husband and I returned to visit High Gate in the 1990's. I wanted to find the gravestones of my relatives, but our time was limited. Our visit that day was odd. There were nice houses in High Gate, and smoke coming from some chimneys, but we did not see one single person the whole time (about four hours) that we were there. The church buildings and grounds were quite pretty, and the cemetery seemed well looked after. I had hoped to return again to see the cemetery and take more pictures, but that probably won't happen now. I would love to hear from anyone who lives in High Gate and knows anything about the Stump family.
